Look, I am not sure how to explain what I saw, but I am going to try. This morning, while I was waiting for my bus to show, I was miserable. I had a final in less than an hour, and I felt completely unprepared for it. I had gotten little sleep that night, all the information I had crammed into my brain rushing around and around in my head. The weather was just the icing on the cake. Though it was completely cloudy, the Texas summer ruined it by making sure that it was humid, hot, and breezeless. I was sweating heavily after only ten minutes, and cursing the bus for being a few minutes late, and cursing my partner for making us walk out here earlier than we needed to. Then I saw him.
Just across the street, I noticed a man walking. My vision is extremely poor, so at first I didn’t notice anything strange about him. He walked slowly, from what I could see, with his head held high, looking straight forward. He looked like he was proud and very much “I’m better than you”. He was wearing a sharp, grey suit. It looked like it was tailored, and let’s be honest, it looked very out of place in our area.
This was smack-dab in the middle of sorority row, so everyone around me was wearing fairly casual clothing, most of us barely scraping ourselves out of bed for our morning classes. This man, though, looked like an executive from a big-city business or something.
Then as he got closer, I started realizing that he just looked… weird. I glanced to the side to see if my partner had noticed this man, but she hadn’t looked up from her phone the entire time we had been waiting. Next I glanced at the lady to my left, but, though she stared across the street, she seemed to not even notice this man.
In my mind, I was confused because this man just looked so weird. The closer he got, the more I noticed about him. His skin was a sickly grey-green color, almost a perfect match to his suit. His hands were thin and his fingers long. It looked a bit like he was wearing a surgical mask, but this, too, was the same grey as his suit.
All the sudden, he slowed, stopped, and turned to face me. I realized immediately that what I had mistaken for a mask was something altogether more horrid. What had looked like a piece of folded fabric suddenly opened into three slits… three mouths stacked one on top of the other. Each mouth spread into a wide grin, grey gums and grey teeth glinting lightly in the dim, cloud-covered sunlight.
Again I glanced to either side of me, and still neither my partner nor the lady next to me seemed to see him. The woman seemed to be looking right through the man across the street.
Still, the grey man just stared at me. Clearly I was terrified. I thought maybe I was seeing things. I tried to explain it away, tried to blame it on my lack of sleep, but still he grinned at me, all three mouths spread ear to ear. It was the most unfriendly, hungry looking smile I had ever seen.
As we stared at each other, I never even heard the bus come. In a flash, the bus was in front of me, and I nearly jumped out of my skin, startling my partner. I rushed onto the bus, still trying to explain what I saw away, and as I glanced out the window, the grey man was gone. Okay, I thought to myself. I was just imagining it. I am just tired. Everything is okay.
All day long, every where I went on campus, I saw the grey man. When I was in the classroom taking my final, I glanced at the clock above the classroom door to check the time. There he was, standing in the window, staring at me. After my exam (which I know did not go well), I met my partner to get lunch, and the grey man followed us the whole time. The entire time, he grinned at me with those three mouths, his grey teeth glistening and his long, grey fingers twitching at his side.
I’m not sure if I’m hallucinating or what. All I know is no one else seems to see him, and he follows me everywhere. I’m a little scared to go home. Because what if he’s there, too?
